History
Peking University People's Hospital (PKUPH) was established to meet the needs of local residents in 1918. It was the first western medical hospital funded and operated by Chinese citizens. The founding president was Dr. Wu Liande, also a founder of the Chinese Medical Association. The hospital was originally named Peking Central Hospital and was but shortly in 1941, a group of renowned physicians and surgeons, including Dr. Zhong Huilan, Dr. Lin Qiaozhi, Dr. Guan Songtao, Dr. Xie Yuanpu, Dr. Meng Jimao, and Dr. Wu Jieping, transferred here from Peking Union Medical College Hospital. They contributed greatly to the improvement of medical care and to teaching a new generation of physicians and nurses.
The hospital has been under the direct supervision of the Chinese Ministry of Health since May 1950, and was renamed Beijing People's Hospital in 1956. It affiliated with the Beijing Medical College in 1958 and has since served as one of its major teaching hospitals. When Beijing Medical University merged with Peking University in 2000, the hospital was renamed Peking University People's Hospital. In 1991, a new campus was built near Xizhimen and, in 1997, a new research and teaching building was opened, followed by the new 20-story inpatient building in 2008. Today, PKUPH functions in an area of over 140,000 sq.m.
