Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma

Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma of Peking University People’s Hospital was established on Jan, 1999. Directed by Dr. Jiang Baoguo, it becomes a key subject of ministry of education in clinical care, medical teaching and research and has an excellent staff of 3 professors, 8 associate professors, 1 attendings, 19 Doctor students and 4 Master students. Now, it is a comprehensive department with a bed capacity of 50, which has more than 25,000 outpatient visits, 1,300 inpatient admissions and more than 1,500 operations annually.

 The mainly research directions cover fracture of limb and joint, injury of spine and peripheral nerve. Remarkable advance was achieved in clinic diagnosis and treatment of the fractures in the spine, the pelvis and extremities for pioneering to adopt up-to-date AO theory and to use internal fixation technique. We took the lead to carry out the techniques of shoulder and elbow replacement and of LCP, LISS, PFNA, PHILLOS system to treat different fractures. We are also advanced in the treatment of peripheral nerve in the China. Based on a number of laboratory researches, the theory of biological tube bridging the peripheral nerve with a small gap has received Beijing’s Scientific and Technical Achievements Award.

Our scientific researches focus on the repair of peripheral nerve, joint fractures, spine injury and mechanism of bone healing. We have got many research funds such as National The 11th 5-year Supporting Planning, National “863” planning and National “973” planning, etc. Many of them have been accomplished. We have published more than 200 papers both clinic and basic researches in the national periodicals. More than 20 articles have been published in the SCI periodicals. Additionally, we’ve got 3 scientific and technical awards and 5 patents about biomaterial conduit small gap bridging peripheral nerve injury and artificial peripheral nerve constructed by bone marrow stromal cells.

In the teaching aspect, we take the task of medical education to the 8-year-system Doctor students of Peking University Medical Center. To meet the training demands of the Doctor students, we created the training program of whole course management, which is on the base of original teaching sybullas.

Solidarity and aspirant are kept all along as the department’s culture. Our treatment skills and medical ethics are generally praised by the society. Our department was entitled to “Youth’s Star Post” by the central authorities of the Communist Youth League in 2003.
