| The preparation of surgical intensive care unit of Peking university peoples’ hospital was initiated in the middle of 1980’s, Dr. Prof. Cui-Ting Huang, the former president and chairman of general surgery, took the development of SICU as priority. Some of young doctors and nurses were sent abroad to US, Germany, Philippines as well as some other domestic hospitals, where they got chance to gain exposure to most developed intensive care medicine.
SICU was founded in year 1991. From then a lot of young doctors and nurses were trained in there, some of them become more professionally oriented to critical care medicine, specialized in pathophysiology and intensive therapy, finally, a critical care team was built and a wide range of regulations, protocols, and guidelines were fostered from that time.
Current director, Prof An Youzhong, joined the ICU team in year 1994, after his 10 years’ training as a surgeon and 1 year’s study as visiting scholar in Germany. Since then, the regular ICU rotation for surgical residents and postgraduates was formally radicated. In addition, with referring to a variety of ICU construction guidelines, work protocols, advanced progress of critical care medicine applied through Europe and US, the rudiment of a critical care team was scientifically established.
Up till now, the Dept. of SICU has 8 patient beds, 9 doctors, including 4 attendings and 5 senior residents(fellows), as well as nearly 40 nursing staff and one medical technician, equipped with most advanced machines. Tremendous postoperative and non-surgical critical ill patients’life were saved in our unit. since 2001, 660-800 patients have been treated each year. The mean APACHEII score is around 14-18, with mortality rate mere 2.1—4.8%. Multiple data have reached domestic and international advanced level. Furthermore , SICU was certificated as one of the first 6 critical care training centres in Beijing in 2002, and is the leading unit of the Institute of critical care medicine of Peking university.
Keeping the pace of the development of global critical care medicine, our team has gradually accumulated a lot of academic knowledge and clinical experiences in the critical care field, such as the diagnosis and treatment of Shock, ARDS, severe infection, severe multiple trauma, DIC, MODS, etc. We developed regular enteral and parenteral nutrition therapy and sedation for ICU patients. The regular life monitoring and support techniques include mechanical ventilation, circulation assist, SPO2, body temperature, CVP, ABG and electrolytes analysis, fiberoptic bronchoscope examination, ETCO2, constant cardiac output monitoring(both Swan-Ganz and PiCCO), PHi monitoring, CRRT, BIS, percutaneous dilated tracheostomy(PDT), electric pacemaker and defibrillation, DVT prevention and many other first aid methods.
Our current research are focused on early intervention of Sepsis, the pharmacodynamics /pharmacokinetics in ICU patients, and sedation on mechanical ventilated patients.
As a team, our mission is to do our best to save our patients’ life by our passionate, selfless and highly efficient teamwork.
