| Department of Pharmacy
The history of the department of pharmacy can be traced back to the “Zhonghe Hospital” period before liberation. There were only a dozen of pharmacy personnel who worked together to complete the work of medicine supply and drug dispensing. Gone through 90 years, the pharmacy department gradually developed into a comprehensive section which places a priority on pharmacy services, scientific research and teaching. Now there are 100 pharmacists (81 in western medicine pharmacy and 19 in traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy) of whom 3 people with doctorate degree, 7 people with master degree and about 70 people with undergraduate or post-secondary education degree.
The department of pharmacy, which includes drug dispensing, medicine supply, preparation system and clinical pharmacy, is an important professional department with administrative and professional skill as well as political and economic properties in our hospital. Our responsibility is to supply medicine throughout the hospital, ensure quality of medicine, provide drug information for patients and hospital staffs, and promote safe, economic, rational and efficient use of medicine.
The pharmacy department maintains a strong commitment to research. Our staffs participate in not only independent studies but also collaborative projects with doctors and nurses. In addition, pharmacists serve as study coordinators, co-investigators and clinical monitors in many investigational drug studies. Our department has already accomplished many research programs about pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacological economy, pharmacy administration and adverse drug reactions. In recent years, the pharmacy department has published more than 200 papers in core pharmacy journals, including SCI papers. It also contributed to more than 20 monographs. Besides, the pharmacists in our department participated in both domestic and international academic conferences each year, such as International Federation of Pharmacy, Annual academic conference of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association and Beijing Pharmaceutical Association. Many pharmacists in our department won “Excellent Paper Award” in these conferences every year.
Professor Li Yuzhen, the chief pharmacist and director of the pharmacy department at Peking University People’s Hospital, is an expert in both hospital pharmacy and pharmacy administration. With the development of hospital pharmacy, the work of clinical pharmacy becomes more and more important. Our pharmacy was approved as the national training base for clinical pharmacists and resident pharmacists. Eight Clinical pharmacists round with doctors and nurses to be a therapeutic team in the ward of liver transplantation, respiration, gynecology, neurology and SICU. The clinical pharmacists are responsible for reviewing the patient medicine regimen and monitoring the patient’s response to their medicines. The pharmacists are also actively involved in monitoring antibiotic therapy, TPN therapy, IV therapy, as well as, any medicines that require additional laboratory monitoring. Our aim is to try our best to ensure safe, economic, rational and efficient use of medicines.
