| Musculoskeletal tumor center
For nearly ten years, our center has been at the forefront of advances in musculoskeletal tumor surgery. We have extensive experience treating both bone and soft tissue tumors of the extremities, pelvis and spine. This has allowed us to develop techniques for the treatment of benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumors that help reduce the risk of tumor recurrence while maximizing limb function. Now, the center has been elected as the key subject of ministry of education, key department of Peking university and research center in musculoskeletal tumor center in China with high prestigious. The head of our center is Prof. Guo Wei who was trained in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and came back to China in 1999. Then he devoted all his heart to the clinic and basic research in orthopeadic oncology field. He does nearly 700 procedures each year, most of which are very complex and challenging pelvic and sacral tumor cases. Also we have established the National Bone and Soft-tissue tumor Tissue Bank first in China. Molecular biology research of sarcoma and immunotherapy for Ewing’s sarcoma are at very front. We have finished and are running many national key foundation programs. More than two hundred academic papers have been published. A multidisciplinary team of specialists provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of several hundreds patients from all over the nation come to the center for treatment with musculoskeletal tumors. One of the main objectives of our center is to provide state-of-the-art treatment of primary, malignant tumors, especially in complex and challenging spinal, pelvic and sacral surgical procedures. We have accumulated lots of experience in sacral tumor resection and reconstruction on base of several hundred cases. We are also the pioneer in chemotherapy and limb salvage for malignant tumors. The limb salvage rate has achieved 90% and the five-year survival has increased from 20% in the past to 70%. Osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, chordoma, and soft tissue sarcomas are some of the diseases that we treat most often. Our goal is to maximize the function of each patient with advanced surgical and reconstructive techniques.
